What Went Right: Redskins Broncos

Don’t be a sourpuss. Pretend you fell asleep in your recliner at the end of the third quarter last night and missed the fourth quarter.

As harsh as the 45-21 loss turned out to be, let’s take a moment to appreciate what went right in Denver.

Highlight: Alfred Morris’ 27-yard run gives Washington room to operate

What went right: Darrel Young leads the way. Denver brings five men to the line of scrimmage, using Von Miller to set the edge. Logan Paulsen gets to Miller’s outside shoulder, and Young chips him to clear the way for Morris. Aldrick Robinson blocks Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie up the field, then releases him to put a block on the safety. Kory Lichtensteiger quickly bumps Trent Williams off the double team, allowing the tackle to seal off the middle linebacker. Young is one-on-one with Rodgers-Cromartie in the hole, leaving Morris to follow his fullback for a big chunk of yardage.

Highlight: Leonard Hankerson catches a 7-yard touchdown pass to tie the game before halftime.

What went right: Hankerson wins his matchup. Lined up in the slot, Hankerson starts the play opposite linebacker Danny Trevathan. Hankerson has the linebacker chasing him from behind, senses the defender is over pursuing him and stops short. Trevathan falls down, opening up a window for Robert Griffin III. Tight end Logan Paulsen’s route distracts safety Mike Adams just long enough to keep him away from Hankerson. Griffin III finds Hankerson for a touchdown.

Highlight: Ryan Kerrigan gets to Peyton Manning and forces a fumble.

What went right: Kerrigan’s pass rush technique. The outside linebacker starts the play outside of tackle Orlando Franklin and attacks the outside shoulder. Kerrigan gets his hands on Franklin first, sinks his hips and extends his arms to leverage a bulrush. While Franklin still has him covered up, Kerrigan has pushed the tackle into the pocket. He slaps his left arm right on the football while Manning rears back, causing the fumble. Brian Orakpo bucks his blocker and fights through a hold by Manning to recover the fumble.

Highlight: Alfred Morris runs for a 1-yard touchdown to take advantage of the turnover.

What went right: The Redskins put a hat on hat. Denver brings eight men to the line of scrimmage. Washington runs a zone run to the left, meaning every blocker starts the play with a step in that direction. Center Will Montgomery sprints to seal off middle linebacker Wesley Woodyard. Kory Lichtensteiger gets good push and twists his man away from the play. Trent Williams stands up defensive end Malik Jackson, and Logan Paulsen keeps Von Miller at bay. Morris runs through Jackson on his way into the end zone.

Highlight: DeAngleo Hall intercepts Peyton Manning and scores his third defensive touchdown of theyear

What went right: Hall holds his ground. The corner is singled up in man-coverage with 6-foot-3, 229-pound receiver Demaryius Thomas. He applies press coverage at the line of scrimmage, stays close to Thomas and keeps his eyes on the quarterback. Thomas falls down as Manning is releasing the ball inside for a post route, and Hall steps in to make the play.

Highlight: Jordan Pugh grabs Washington’s second interception of the day

What went right: Pugh’s in good position. E.J. Biggers lines up opposite Wes Welker in the slot for a matchup Peyton Manning likes. London Fletcher puts pressure on manning with a delayed blitz. Biggers drapes Welker the whole way, but Manning forces the ball, and the corner prepares to catch the interception. Biggers can’t make the play, but safety Pugh is playing the zone behind him. Pugh reaches behind and gathers the ball with his right hand, then completes the interception.

Highlight: DeAngelo Hall picks off his second pass of the day.

What went right: Hall makes a phenomenal play. Washington leaves its No. 1 cover man on an island against Thomas again. Manning throws a high ball hoping Thomas will win the toss-up. Hall reads the receiver to know when the ball is coming, reads the pass over his shoulder and leaps to contest the pass. Hall knocks the ball away from Thomas with his left hand before securing the pick.

Highlight: Pierre Garcon makes a stunning one-handed catch

What went right: Nothing you can teach. The Broncos bring a corner blitz, leaving Garcon uncovered. Under duress, Robert Griffin III throws a ball almost too high to catch. Garcon jumps backwards, fully extends his right arm and stops the ball in the air, pulling it into his body before falling to the turf.
